Lead yourself into the future

February27

On Tuesday week 4 the two Carey’s came together to defeat a series of three challenges. Number one: The newspaper tower challenge!  This challenge is a formidable foe but the best 2 teams were able to defeat it. Number two: The cup stacking challenge! This challenge was was easily defeated and no team was defeated this time round. Number three: The planking challenge! This change was the worst of all. It made us sweat, it made us uncomfortable and worst of all only one team was left standing and that team…………………………………………wasn’t us.

The year 6 conference was uncomfortable and tiring, but all in all, it taught us more than it made us restless.

One of the highlights of the day was the planking challenge because even though our group didn’t win we still did pretty well and we all still did get icy poles ( mine was lime ). In that challenge the lime green group won and yet they got lumped with the worst job: going to get the icy poles ( 70 metres to the nearest cover ) in the pouring rain and bringing them back.

I was in the light blue group and my group members were: Ollie, Grace, Gracie, Sam, Christian, Frederick, Michael and me. In the newspaper tower challenge we had an idea that we could stack our newspaper up like a pack of cards. We soon figured out that wouldn’t work. So with 2 minutes to go we decided it would be better if we just lumped it all in the tallest pile possible. So at the end we were told to take our hands off the towers and when we did there were only 3 towers left standing. After about 40 seconds the tallest tower fell down. Which meant only 2 towers were standing hence why I said 2 teams did defeat it. In the cup stacking challenge we should have won but the team who did started they’re stacking on a chair so they had a head start. We found out a really good way to stack the cups: put a rubber band around the cup and touch the rubber band not the cup. In the planking challenge we had to have more than half of the group planking or else we are out. I think we communicated really well and that’s why we came 4th.

All in all, I would say it was a miserable day ( weather wise ) and the conference was super fun.

Some of the holidays I celebrate

November19

Hi everyone,

Some of the holidays I celebrate are Christmas, Easter, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve, Halloween, Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year. Those are just some of the holidays I celebrate with my family.

Christmas: Christmas is a celebration of the death of Jesus and we celebrate this on the 25 of December and we put up a tree that we decorate and we have this made up person that gives us presents. We also have desserts like Pavlova and Christmas pudding. Pavlova is usually served with fruits like strawberries and blueberries.

Chinese New Year: Chinese New Year is the celebration of a new year. This is usually 1 month after the Australian New Year because the Chinese run off the Lunar Calendar. I usually go out with my family on this day and we give my family red packets and I get red packets too.

Halloween: On Halloween I go trick or treating with my friends and family and we get lollies dress up and go out for a walk around the neighbourhood.

What holidays do you celebrate?

An amazing trip to an amazing camp!

November8

I’m back and I’m better than ever everyone! I just came back from camp Toonallook and it was awesome!!!! We did so many activities and I can tell you I loved all of them. We did things like:

        • A game where we had to look for a place in a photo and go there to find 2 letters.
        • We went canoeing on the beach with jellyfish.
        • We went on a bike ride around the Banksia Peninsula
        • We went fishing
        • We went on a bike ride around Raymond Island
        • We played The Shoe Game!
        • We played Empire
        • We played King ball

PLA’s We Used

Some  of the PLA’s we used were resilience. I think I displayed resilience when I accidentally stabbed my finger with a fishing hook especially because the hooks are meant to go in one way and not go out the same way. Another way we displayed resilience is when we got attacked by swarms of mosquitos throughout the whole camp! It was disgusting and annoying. I still think I have the bites on my leg. Someone in my class got 61 mosquito bites!

The Games

One of the games we played was Empire. Empire is a game where you get with a partner and you, your partner, and a bunch of other duo’s get a topic. Then you have to choose something related to that topic, after that you have to all sit around the campfire and someone ( who isn’t playing ) reads out all the names without saying who is who. Then one group starts and they have to try to guess who is who, after their first guess the person who was guessed, if the first person got it right then they become a group of 4 with the people who guessed them, if not than it is their turn to guess. This keeps going until one group has everyone.

Activities

We went canoeing, we went bike riding, we went swimming and we played King Ball. We went on two bike rides the first one was around the Banksia Peninsula. We had 1 stop on the beach and I skimmed rocks on the water. I got 5 bounces. Did you know the world record is 81 bounces. The second bike ride was around Raymond Island. We spotted 32 koalas in trees!

Of all the things I described to you, what do you think would be your favourite part?

My new avatar

October13

This is my new avatar. I chose the smile because I like to smile. I made my face a bit more chubby because that is how it is. I chose the sunglasses because I just like the look. I also think the jacket looks nice and that is why I chose it. I chose the nose because it is the one that looks most like a human nose. I chose the hairstyle because my hair is messy. We also had to make this avatar for a blogging challenge.

  • 1835: It was the year Melbourne was established
  • 1851: It was the year the ‘Welcome Nugget’ was found
  • 1854: It was the year the Eureka Stockade took place
  • 1901: It was the year Australia became one nation

These are the dates that were important in our history.

The Books that have their own week

August28

Last week we had book week. I’m pretty sure I had a blog post about this last year right? I’m not entirely sure. The books that were shortlisted for the Eve Pownell Award were: Make Believe M.C Escher for kids, Waves, Sorry Day, Bouncing Back, The Happiness Box and Our Birds. All of them were non-fiction and we had to judge them. Some things we went by when we judged them were.

  • What makes a good information book?
  • Which was your favourite shortlisted book?

My favourite book was Make Believe. I really liked it because it had good information on art and pictures. It also had really cool pictures like the Penrose Triangle.

The book that won the Eve Pownell Award was Sorry day. No offense to the author and illustrator of that book but it didn’t make my top three. But anyway, CONGRATS.

My second place book was bouncing back because it was easy to read and it had interesting facts and illustrations on a bandicoot.

Search https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2019 for the shortlisted books and search https://www.cbca.org.au/winners-2019 for the winners.

If you have read the books what do you think your top three would be? If you haven’t just looking at the front covers what would your top three be?

The sovereign hill experience

August1

Hey peeps,

I just came back from camp and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to Sovereign Hill and we ate warm raspberry drops. We also went bowling, went to a bunch of different shops AND we went to school. Now that I think about it we did a lot of things.

We were away for 2 NIGHTS AND 3 DAYS! So first I went to where we met to get on the bus and I had to wake up at 6:15am. I was so tired. When we went to where we were supposed to go I got on to the bus and  we started to drive to Sovereign Hill. Nearly 3/4 of the way through the trip the bus driver left the bus and we all thought we had a flat tyre. It turns out he forgot to lock the door that leads to the bags. Then when we got to Ballarat we went the wrong way!!!????!!??!??!??!!  So the bus driver had to turn back around and drive back to the MADE Museum ( the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka) because that is where we were stopping to have a bit of background knowledge on what happened during the 1850’s. Turns out that the MADE Museum is actually where the Battle of Eureka happened! MIND BLOWN! We discovered what had happened during that time and we researched certain people. I had John Humffray.

After that we finally got to Sovereign Hill, we went to the accomodation and we did 2 mine tours and had some free time. At 5:00pm we went to the New York Bakery for dinner and had Chicken Schnitzel and 3 different types of vegetables. When we got back to the accomodation we found out who was in our cabins I had 7 other people in my cabin.

The next day we went to breakfast at the Sovereign Hill Cafe. We then had to get ready for school at 9:00am. Then we walked to a building which had the costumes we were wearing for the school program. At school we did the usual olden day school work like learning how to write in Copper Plate handwriting, Maths and drawing. When we were let out of school my friends and I went straight to the lolly shop and bought a bunch of lollies there. Then I went to the grocery store and bought 6 chocolate cannonballs. After that we went all the way to the waterloo store and I bought a popping gun that I couldn’t figure out how to use. I had to go back to the waterloo store to ask for the man to fix it. He eventually did but then he pulled too hard and broke it into 2 pieces so I had to take a different one. We also did this sound and light show when it was freezing cold at night.

On the last day of my camp experience we had more school and was pretty much like the 2nd day but we went to the New York Bakery for breakfast. We also had to memorise our 16 times tables. Awards were also given to people who worked hard and I was a scholar. Then we went on a 2 hour bus ride back home and we gave our bags to our parents back at school and went home.

The worst thing about this experience was the fact that someone found a 3kg golden nugget 1 week later!!!

According to my summary of my camp what do you thing would have been your favourite part? Why? Answer in a comment.

The week of the books

June19

My favourite part of the festival  was when we had the  lunchtime activities. My favourite activity was the treasure hunt. I liked the treasure hunt because you could walk around the school  and look for books with your buddies.

Something I learned from Mark Wilson would be how to draw better than I used to. I also learned that you turn stick figures into real drawings. I didn’t know that until he told me. During our lesson we drew a stick figure of his dad. Then we thickened his body parts to more than just sticks. Finally we coloured it in to create a silhouette. I also finalised my opinion on war when he said that in every war book he made someone died or got injured or got post traumatic stress.

What is your favourite Mark Wilson book? Why? Answer in a comment.
